Today, 5 June, is World Environment Day.

As in previous years, it is a perfect opportunity to stop for a moment and reflect on the impact that our actions have on the planet. It may be tempting to think that nothing we can do would make a lot of difference, that we have nothing to contribute… but this is simply not true. Maybe we do not have the power to dictate environmental policies or save an endangered species, but one thing is very clear: if we want to change things, we should start at home.

Our most insignificant actions and day-to-day habits define us, they make us who we are. Every day we have the chance to show those around us, our family and friends, just how committed we are to saving the planet. Whenever you go to work by bicycle or public transport instead of by car, or whenever you turn off the central heating and all the lights before going away for the weekend, you are achieving three things: you are saving energy, helping the environment and, most importantly, sending out a message to those around you.

Thus, little by little, in our day-to-day routines, is precisely how energy efficiency must move forwards, transforming our consumer society into one of responsible and sustainable consumption. Have a shower instead of a bath, use the air conditioning prudently and, when buying domestic appliances, pay close attention to their energy labels.

Remember: “The Earth is not an inheritance from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children” (old Indian proverb). A firm commitment to look after our planet and use its resources in a sustainable and responsible manner is the only way to honour such as generous loan. And it is a commitment shared by all of us, within our own individual capabilities.

Happy Environment Day!

Bio: Since graduating 9 years ago, my professional life has been focused entirely on energy efficiency. I am incredibly lucky to have a job that I adore, and the chance to perform such a role at one of the world’s largest energy companies, a pioneer in the field of clean, sustainable energy, is a challenge that I face eagerly and enthusiastically every day.
