The Radar Programme: “Looking after myself and my colleagues”

* Author: Juan José Palacios Linaza *

Five years have gone by since the first pilot groups were set up in the RADAR Programme. We are now in a position to confirm that the initial goals have been met: on the one hand, a deeper level of involvement among individual employees and working groups as regards ensuring their own health and safety and those of all the people that work at our facilities; and on the other, significant development in individual and group leadership as regards managing and dealing with aspects that can have a major impact on preventing occupational risk prevention, both now and in the future.

Iberdrola is probably the only company in the world where over 2,700 employees belonging to 270 groups are attaining these targets after holding over 1,500 specific meetings in which they presented and registered their commitments to enhancing occupational risk prevention.  In Spain, this has meant a 67% decrease in the weighting of unsafe situations presented due to behavioural aspects. This is a positive figure which is also indicative of the increase in professionalism among the employees. One of the effects of this is the impact on health and safety.Image may be NSFW.

The decisive support of the management, the involvement of the heads of the various departments, the personal commitment of each employee and the professionalism of the prevention organisations have been combined and strengthened every time a RADAR group has been launched in Spain, Brazil, Mexico, the US, the UK and Greece. “Looking after myself and my colleagues” has become a value that is shared by all of the companies in the group.

The approach in Occupational Risks Prevention is changing. We have to achieve “0 accidents”, but the first step towards that is achieving “0 situations that could lead to accidents”.  It’s a harder and a longer road to take – in fact, it’s the “roadmap” of the RADAR programme, but we will get there, with the enthusiasm, commitment, leadership and tenacity of the people that make up Iberdrola.

Bio: as a psychologist, I have always had an interest in the world of training and human resources. I’m currently coordinating a highly motivated group that is achieving excellent results in the field of information and training on occupational risks prevention. As the coordinator of the RADAR programme, I have attended the launch of the majority of these groups in Spain and provided facilitator training to those in charge of launching the programme in the future. In doing so, I have witnessed the major impact that this programme is having on our company’s culture of prevention worldwide.
