It was in July 2011 at a scholarship awards ceremony to study a Master’s degree in Energy and Environment where Manuel Marín, President of the Iberdrola Foundation said: “You have been selected from among the best academics to receive Iberdrola Foundation Scholarships and begin a course of study with the ultimate goal of joining a leading company with an international presence. “Once you’ve finished your studies we ask you to consider joining us, where you would have great opportunities to give your best and, in return, reward our investment in your training.”
I remember hearing these exciting words like it was only yesterday. Ignacio Galán then spoke about Iberdrola’s international projects, the short and long term challenges of the international energy sector and Iberdrola’s determination to play a key role in the industry.
At that time I was finishing my thesis, a study of the most efficient forms of energy transmission in offshore wind farms, which was awarded ‘Best Project’ prize at the Bilbao School of Engineering Foundation. In October 2011, I started my Master’s degree in Renewable Energy Integration Systems at the University of Bilbao.
This time my final project analysed the electrical stability problems posed by the introduction of the electric vehicle and my efforts were rewarded with ‘Best Master’s transcript’. At an event organised by the University I was presented with my diploma and gave a talk, to future students, about how this experience changed my life. While studying for my Master’s I applied, through the Bilbao Recruitment Department, to be selected for the ScottishPower Graduate Scheme.
For me, ScottishPower stands out because of its strong commitment to renewable energies and innovation, subjects I have always had an interest in. Following an interview I was invited to take a place in the Graduate Scheme based in Liverpool, a challenge I accepted without hesitation.
Since starting my placement in SP Energy Networks I have witnessed their dedicated efforts to train young workers and become an international model in the electricity sector. I have spent the last year completing my training whilst working in various departments.
